Within the Bachelor of Education (Teaching) Huarahi Māori qualification, there are three EDPRACM (Education Practicum Māori or noho ā-kura) courses, that have an associated inquiry into practice paper with on-campus sessions.

Ngā Aho Matua o te Noho-ā-kura:  Practicum Themes:

Four themes have been identified as critical to student teacher development and feature during each of their practicum placements: 

1.    Te hanga hononga ngaio (tae atu ki te whakawhitiwhitinga kōrero whaihua) 

       Forming professional relationships (including effective communication) 

2.    Te arotahi ki te ako e whaihua ana

       Focusing on purposeful teaching and learning 

3.    Te kawe i te tūranga hei pouako ngaio i Aotearoa

       Being a professional teacher in Aotearoa New Zealand 

4.    Te whakaatu māramatanga ki te pīroiroitanga o te tūranga o te pouako i roto i te horopaki mātauranga

Te pūtake o te noho ā-kura 1: EDPRACM 100

EDPRACM 100 – Noho ā-kura 1 is a five week-school placement that builds upon learning from the student teachers’ two-week non-assessed ‘He Whakatakinga ki te Noho ā-kura – Introduction to Practicum’ school placement. The student teacher will complete one day of full control. This noho ā-kura has a specific focus on:

• appropriate communication and relationships
• developing the skills of observation and planning to inform emerging pedagogical practice that contributes to children’s learning
• implementing strategies for professional reflection and development
• developing understanding of the teacher’s professional role and how this is affected by factors such as parent/whānau expectations, school policies, government policies and initiatives, and wider community influences
• using digital technologies to support collaborative practice

Builds relationships and establishes professional communication with ākonga and colleagues. Engages in collaborative teaching and learning. Explores the role of the professional teacher through an inquiry-based approach to teaching and learning. Examines te reo Māori discourse relevant to the practicum context. Te pūtake o te noho ā-kura 2: EDPRACM 204

EDPRACM 204 – Noho ā-kura 2 is a six week assessed practicum. The student teacher will complete eight days of full responsibility for the learning programme. This noho ā-kura has a specific focus on:

• effective communication and relationships with children, colleagues, families and whānau
• how pedagogical practice optimises children’s learning and is informed by theory, research and practice
• the behaviour and dispositions expected of professional teachers in Aotearoa-New Zealand
• teaching in relation to contextual factors

Develops professional knowledge, skills and dispositions required for effective teaching and learning through an inquiry-based approach. Engages in noticing, recognising and responding to diverse learners informed by or guided by curricula. Practises and reflects on skills necessary to manage complex learning environments. Te pūtake o te noho ā-kura 3: EDPRACM 304A and B

EDPRACM 304 – Noho ā-kura 3 has two parts, PART A = a three week non-assessed practicum and PART B = an eight week assessed practicum. The student teacher will complete 15-20 days of full responsibility for the learning programme. This noho ā-kura has a central focus on creating and sustaining purposeful learning that enables achievement for all learners, through:

• the student teacher’s effective communication and relationships with children, colleagues, families and whānau
• an examination of the ways in which pedagogical practice optimises children’s learning and is informed by theory, research and practice
• demonstrating the behaviour and dispositions expected of professional teachers in Aotearoa-New Zealand
• the student teacher’s own teaching in relation to contextual factors

Builds and sustains culturally responsive, ethical, learner-focused relationships with ākonga, colleagues and whānau in complex learning or education environments. Utilises an inquiry-based approach to demonstrate competency in professional knowledge, and the skills and dispositions required for effective teaching in Aotearoa New Zealand.
